Holiday destinations in Italy for families

There is no shortage of family friendly destinations when you head to Italy. In fact, the hard part is making your decision from the many options available! Where you decide on will depend on whether you are looking for a city, the countryside or a beach – here are some options to keep in mind.

City destinations
Italy's cities are perfect for visiting with children. Not only will you find plenty of restaurants serving up that all-time favourite: pizza, and ice-cream parlours around every corner, but there are also many fantastic attractions. For example, head to Rome for a few days and you can visit:

  • the awe-inspiring Colosseum;
  • Villa Borghese, where you can enjoy the park;
  • the Bioparco di Roma, a fantastic zoo;
  • the Explora museum, which is perfect for children.

Alternatively, you could go to another city like Venice. Here you can enjoy a gondola ride or see real glass blowing on Murano.

Countryside destinations
If you want to spend some or all of your time in the countryside, you have plenty to tempt you in Italy. The picturesque hills of Tuscany are always a popular option for holidays where there is plenty of outside space to explore.

But one of the best options is to head to the lakes. Here you can enjoy Lake Como and Lake Garda, as well as many others. Whether you stay in a villa on the shore, go hiking in the nearby mountains, try out mountain biking, or you rent a car and go exploring, you and your family will never be bored.

You can even head up the Monte Baldo cable car or visit Gardaland while you are here, which is Italy's biggest amusement park – the kids will love it and so will you!

Beach destinations
Then of course you have the beaches. There are so many options to choose from here, and while they tend not to be the spectacular sandy beaches of southern Spain they are still very picturesque.

One place where the beaches really do match the top European destinations is in Sardinia. Here you will find some of the best beaches in Europe, and you can stay in a hotel or villa right on the beach and happily spend a week or so in a family-friendly resort.

Other options for beaches include Rimini on the Adriatic coast, and the island of Elba off the coast of Tuscany.

Why not choose more than one?
These are just a few options, and even with these, it can be hard to make up your mind where to go. So why not choose more than one place?
